For a 1,200 sq ft main living area that is roughly $4,800 to $14,400. When a bid comes in far below that, the gap is almost always slab preparation nobody has priced yet, or a labor-only number that leaves out material. Both are legitimate ways to buy. They are not the same thing, and comparing one against the other is how people get surprised on day three.

Two things about that chart. First, the bands are wide because each bar contains everything from builder-grade to premium — a $2 plank and a $10 plank are both “LVP.” Second, and far more useful: the material is rarely what decides your flooring installation cost. In this city the deciding factor is almost always what is underneath it.
Nearly every home in El Paso sits on a slab-on-grade foundation. A flat, clean, dry slab is a fast job. A slab with a hump in the hallway, a shrinkage crack running under where the tile is going, or forty-year-old thinset welded to it is a different job entirely — same material, same square footage, a very different number at the bottom of the page.

Slab prep is the one nobody prices over the phone
If a contractor hands you a firm per-square-foot number before walking your slab, they are either padding it heavily or they will be back with a change order. Neither is what you want. Flatness tolerance for large-format tile is genuinely tight: ANSI A108.02 allows no more than 1/8″ in 10 ft and 1/16″ in 2 ft for any tile with an edge 15″ or longer. Plenty of El Paso slabs do not meet that out of the box, especially in the newer Horizon City and far East subdivisions where the pad is still finding its level.
That is not a reason to panic. It is a reason to insist the flooring installation cost is written down, line by line, before anyone starts.

Does labor-only lower your flooring installation cost?
Straight answer
Buying your own material and paying labor only is usually cheaper on paper and riskier in practice. Labor-only flooring installation cost runs about $2 to $6 per square foot for most hard surfaces here. All-in pricing folds contractor material pricing into one number and puts one company on the hook for the whole floor.
We do both and we will tell you which one saves you money on your specific job. If you already bought forty boxes at a big-box store, we install what you already bought. If you have not bought yet, contractor pricing on material usually closes most of the gap on its own.
The catch with labor-only is ordering. Almost everyone under-orders. You need a waste factor — roughly 10% for a straight lay, 15% or more for a diagonal or herringbone pattern, and more again if the plank has heavy visual variation and you intend to cull boards. Run short mid-job and you are hunting a dye lot that may no longer exist.

How to compare three bids without getting fooled

Why two flooring installation cost quotes can be $10,000 apart
Here is the honest picture behind the numbers. Two contractors can walk the same 1,200 sq ft house and produce flooring installation cost quotes $10,000 apart without either one being dishonest. One assumed the slab is flat and the tile is builder-grade porcelain laid straight. The other measured the slab, found a 3/8″ dip across the living room, priced self-leveler, and quoted a large-format tile in a stack bond that needs tighter tolerances.
The second quote is higher and it is also the one that will still look right in five years. This is why the comparison that matters is not the bottom line — it is line item against line item. A cheap flooring installation cost that leaves out slab prep is not cheaper. It is the same job with the prep deferred until it becomes a callback, and callbacks on tile mean breaking out finished work.
Ask each bidder the same three questions: what did you measure the slab with, what happens to the price if the slab needs leveling, and is the old floor removal in this number or not. The answers separate real estimates from guesses faster than any online flooring installation cost calculator will.
