The short answer
Sunset Heights, Kern Place, Manhattan Heights and the streets around them were built long before slab-on-grade became standard here. Plenty of those houses have a raised wood subfloor, and some still have the original hardwood sitting under carpet that was laid over it decades ago.
So the first job in a Central home is not choosing a material. It is pulling a corner of the carpet to find out what is actually down there, because refinishing what exists is sometimes the better and cheaper answer.

I think there is hardwood under my carpet. Should I refinish it?
Maybe, and it is worth finding out before you spend money on new material. We pull a corner at the free measurement and look at species, thickness and condition. If refinishing is the better answer we will tell you, even though it is not the job we would be quoting.
Can I put luxury vinyl plank over an old wood subfloor?
Often yes, once the subfloor is sound and flat. The prep is different from slab prep, and a springy or uneven subfloor has to be addressed first or the finished floor will feel hollow. We check that at the measurement.
Will new flooring hurt the character of a historic house?
It can, and we will say so. Very wide planks and heavy grey tones can fight original trim, door casings and room proportions. There are materials that sit comfortably in these houses and we will point you at them.
Do Central houses have the same caliche slab problems?
The ones built on slabs do. The older raised-floor houses have a different set of issues, mostly moisture and subfloor condition rather than slab movement. Which set applies to you depends on your house, not your ZIP code.
