Can You Install Vinyl Plank Over Tile? Five Checks First

The first of those five checks is the one people skip. A tile that has released from the slab moves under load, and anything floating on top of it will move too. It is a five-minute test with a knuckle or a golf ball, and it is the difference between vinyl plank over tile lasting twenty years and creaking within six months.

Check five is the one that kills the plan most often. Adding 3/8 of an inch sounds trivial until the dishwasher will not come out from under the counter without a fight, or the exterior door drags on the new floor. Both are solvable — doors get trimmed, appliances get shimmed — but they belong in the quote, not in a conversation on day two.

That last row deserves a word. In El Paso’s older Central, Northeast and Lower Valley housing, a 9×9 inch vinyl tile under the carpet is a genuine possibility. The EPA’s guidance is not to sand, scrape or level it, and it notes that installing a new floor over it is often the safer approach. That is one case where vinyl plank over the old floor is not just cheaper, it is the recommended handling.

On the moisture question, do not trust appearance. A slab can look bone dry and still fail an in-situ relative humidity test. Rigid-core vinyl plank tolerates far more slab moisture than glue-down wood does — some products publish limits up to 90% slab RH against 75% for glued engineered hardwood — which is another reason it is our default recommendation over a questionable El Paso slab.

What we do differently on a floor going over tile

Three things change on a vinyl plank over tile job when the substrate is existing tile rather than a bare slab. First, cleaning matters more: any grit left on a polished tile surface becomes a bump under the plank forever. We scrub, not sweep. Second, the starting line gets set against the old grout grid, not just the wall, so the new seams never land directly along a wide old joint. Third, we leave a slightly larger expansion gap, because a floating floor on a slick tile substrate moves more freely than one on a rougher slab.

Three questions to ask any contractor quoting vinyl plank over tile

“How did you check the tile is bonded?” The answer should describe tapping or sounding the whole floor, not glancing at it. If nobody sounded the floor, nobody knows what is under your new floor.

“What is your flatness tolerance and how did you measure it?” A real answer names a number and a tool — a 10 foot straightedge and the manufacturer’s published spec. A shrug means the risk is being transferred to you.

“What happens at the doors and the dishwasher?” Every vinyl plank over tile job adds height. A contractor who has thought it through will already have measured your exterior door clearance and looked at whether the dishwasher can come out for service afterwards.

When it is worth demoing anyway

Sometimes the checks pass and we still suggest removing the tile. If the existing floor is only in half the house and you want one continuous material at one height throughout, going over tile in one room leaves a step. If you are planning to sell soon and the tile is dated but sound, a buyer’s inspector will note the build-up at the thresholds. And if you have your heart set on a floor thicker than the height budget allows, no amount of clever trim work fixes that.

Those are preference calls, not safety calls. In every one of them, vinyl plank over tile would still perform — it just would not give you the result you actually want.
